Zodiac Finder
The sky and the calendar, both have something to say.
Enter your birth date to reveal your Western zodiac sign and element, plus your Chinese zodiac animal.
How it works
Your Western sun sign is found by matching your birth day and month to the traditional tropical zodiac date ranges, and its element (fire, earth, air or water) follows from the sign. The Chinese zodiac animal is based on your birth year in the 12-year cycle.
When it helps
Useful if you're curious which sign you fall under, especially if your birthday sits near the edge of two signs, or if you want your Chinese zodiac animal as well.
The twelve signs and their dates
The tool uses the classic tropical zodiac table: Aries (March 21 – April 19), Taurus (April 20 – May 20), Gemini (May 21 – June 20), Cancer (June 21 – July 22), Leo (July 23 – August 22), Virgo (August 23 – September 22), Libra (September 23 – October 22), Scorpio (October 23 – November 21), Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21), Capricorn (December 22 – January 19), Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) and Pisces (February 19 – March 20).
These ranges come from the dates the Sun enters each 30° slice of the ecliptic, measured from the spring equinox. Because the equinox does not fall on exactly the same moment every year, the real changeover can land a day earlier or later than the table — which is why people born on the first or last day of a sign sometimes see a different answer elsewhere.
Elements and what they describe
Each sign belongs to one of four elements. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is associated with energy and initiative, Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with practicality and patience, Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) with ideas and communication, and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) with emotion and intuition. The trait words shown with your result are the short descriptions traditionally attached to your sign.
How the Chinese zodiac part works
The Chinese zodiac runs on two cycles at once: twelve animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) and five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each element lasting two years. Together they repeat every 60 years. 2020 was a Metal Rat year, and the tool counts forward or backward from there — so someone born in 1990, for example, gets the Metal Horse.
One simplification to know about: the traditional Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year, not January 1. If your birthday is in January or early February, check the Lunar New Year date for your birth year — you may belong to the previous year's animal.
Frequently asked questions
Why might my sign differ from another site?
Sign boundaries shift by a day in some years. Sites use slightly different cut-off dates, so birthdays on the cusp can vary.
Does the Chinese zodiac start on January 1st?
Traditionally the year begins at Lunar New Year (late January to mid-February). This tool uses your calendar birth year, so if you were born in January or early February, your traditional animal may be the previous one.
Is this my full birth chart?
No. This shows your sun sign only. A full natal chart also needs your exact birth time and place to work out your rising sign, Moon sign and planet positions.
What about the 13th sign, Ophiuchus?
Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun passes through, but Western astrology uses twelve equal 30° signs tied to the seasons rather than the constellations, so it isn't part of the system this tool uses.
