Weight Converter
From milligrams to metric tons.
Convert between milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds and stone.
How it works
Values are converted through kilograms using exact definitions: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ounce = 1/16 pound, and 1 stone = 14 pounds.
When it helps
Useful for recipes, shipping weights, gym plates, or body weight given in stone or pounds.
The units and how they relate
The metric units step up by thousands: 1,000 milligrams make a gram, 1,000 grams a kilogram, and 1,000 kilograms a metric ton. In the imperial system, 16 ounces make a pound and 14 pounds make a stone, a unit still commonly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland.
The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so conversions between the two systems are exact. Only the display is rounded.
Worked examples
A body weight of 11 stone 4 pounds is (11 × 14) + 4 = 158 pounds, and 158 × 0.4536 ≈ 71.7 kg. A recipe calling for 8 ounces of butter needs about 227 grams. A 23 kg airline baggage limit is about 50.7 pounds.
Strictly speaking, kilograms and pounds measure mass, not weight. In everyday life the difference doesn't matter, because scales on Earth are calibrated to show mass.
