Volume Converter

Liters, gallons, cups — sorted.

Convert between milliliters, liters, fluid ounces, cups, pints and gallons.

How it works

Values are converted through liters. This tool uses US customary units, where one US gallon is 3.785411784 liters and one US cup is about 236.6 ml.

When it helps

Useful in the kitchen when following recipes from another country, or for fuel and container sizes.

US and metric kitchen measures

Recipes from the US use cups, pints, quarts and gallons, while most other countries use milliliters and liters. In the US system, 2 cups make a pint, 2 pints a quart and 4 quarts a gallon, and a cup is 8 US fluid ounces.

UK recipes can be confusing because the imperial pint and gallon are about 20% larger than the US ones, and a 'metric cup' in Australia is 250 ml. This tool uses US measures, so check where your recipe comes from.

Worked examples

A recipe asking for 1½ cups of milk needs 1.5 × 236.6 ≈ 355 ml. A 2-liter bottle holds about 67.6 US fluid ounces, or roughly 8.45 cups. A car's 50-liter fuel tank holds about 13.2 US gallons.

For dry ingredients like flour or sugar, weight is more reliable than volume, because a cup of flour can weigh quite different amounts depending on how it's packed.
