Slug Generator

Turn a title into a clean URL slug.

Convert any text into a clean, lowercase, hyphen-separated URL slug.

How it works

Text is lowercased, accents and special characters are removed or replaced, and every run of spaces or punctuation becomes a single hyphen, with no hyphens at the start or end.

When it helps

Clean slugs make URLs readable and shareable, for blog posts, product pages and file names.

Worked examples

'10 Tips for Better Sleep!' becomes '10-tips-for-better-sleep'. 'Café & Crème Brûlée Recipe' becomes 'cafe-creme-brulee-recipe', since accents are removed and the ampersand is dropped. Multiple spaces or symbols in a row collapse into a single hyphen.

The result uses only lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, which works on every web server and is easy to type and share.

Good slug habits

Keep slugs short and focused on the page's main topic — three to five words is usually enough. Avoid dates unless they're essential, so the URL still makes sense when you update the content.

Once a page is published and shared, avoid changing its slug. If you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL so links and search rankings carry over.

Frequently asked questions

Why use hyphens instead of underscores?

Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, which makes URLs easier to read.

Should slugs be short?

Short, descriptive slugs are best. Leave out filler words if possible.

Does it handle Turkish and German letters?

Yes. Accents are removed (é → e, ü → u, ş → s), and letters like ı and ß become i and ss, so Turkish and German titles give clean slugs.
