Pressure Converter

Bar, PSI, atmospheres — instantly.

Convert between pascals, kilopascals, bar, PSI and atmospheres.

How it works

Values are converted through pascals: 1 bar = 100,000 Pa, 1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa, and 1 PSI is about 6,894.76 Pa.

When it helps

Useful for tire pressure, weather readings, diving, or equipment specs that use different units.

Where each unit shows up

PSI is common on tire gauges in the US, bar is used for tires and diving in Europe, kilopascals appear in many technical specs and car manuals, and hectopascals (equal to millibars) are used in weather maps. One standard atmosphere is the average air pressure at sea level.

Tire and pump gauges usually show gauge pressure — the pressure above the surrounding air. Scientific values are often absolute pressure, which includes the roughly 1 atm of air around us.

Worked examples

A tire inflated to 32 PSI is at about 2.2 bar or 221 kPa. A scuba tank filled to 200 bar holds about 2,900 PSI. A weather reading of 1,013 hPa is about one standard atmosphere, while a strong storm may drop below 980 hPa.

Every 10 meters of seawater adds roughly one atmosphere of pressure, which is why divers think in bar and atmospheres.

Frequently asked questions

What's a typical car tire pressure?

Often around 30–35 PSI (about 2.1–2.4 bar), but always follow the label on your vehicle.

Is 1 bar the same as 1 atmosphere?

Close but not equal: 1 atm is about 1.013 bar.

What's the difference between kPa and hPa?

1 kPa is 10 hPa. Weather services use hPa, so 1,013 hPa equals 101.3 kPa.
