Life in Weeks
4,000 tiny squares. Make them count.
Enter your birth date and an expected lifespan to see every week of your life as a single grid.
How it works
Each small square in the grid represents one week. The tool counts the weeks from your birth date to today and fills them in, leaving the remaining weeks up to your chosen expected lifespan empty.
When it helps
Seeing a whole life on one screen is a powerful perspective check — many people use it for motivation, goal-setting or reflection.
How the grid is calculated
The total number of squares is your chosen life expectancy in years multiplied by 365.25 days (to account for leap years) and divided by 7. An 80-year grid therefore has about 4,174 weeks. The filled squares are the number of full weeks between your birth date and today, so the grid moves forward by one square every seven days.
Your birth date is saved only in your own browser, so the grid is ready the next time you open the page without anything being sent to a server.
Ways people use it
Seeing roughly 4,000 squares on a single screen makes time feel concrete in a way a number of years doesn't. Some people use the grid for planning — marking how many weeks are left in a degree, a project or a savings plan. Others use it as a weekly reflection prompt: what did this one square hold? Teachers sometimes use it to show students how much of a lifetime school actually takes up.
It's worth remembering the grid is a perspective tool, not a prediction. The remaining squares depend on the lifespan you choose, and averages say nothing certain about any one person.
Frequently asked questions
What lifespan should I choose?
Global average life expectancy is around 73 years, and higher in many countries. Pick whatever feels meaningful; it's just the size of the grid.
Where does the idea come from?
The 'life in weeks' grid was popularized by Tim Urban's 'Wait But Why' blog.
Why does my week count differ slightly from another calculator?
Calculators round differently — some use 52 weeks per year, others count exact days. This tool counts the actual days since your birth date and divides by 7, which is the most precise approach.
Is my birth date stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser's local storage, so the page remembers it on your device. It isn't sent to our servers.
