Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimated ideal body weight from height.

Estimate an ideal body weight range using the Devine formula, based on height and sex.

How it works

The Devine formula starts at 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds 2.3 kg for each additional inch of height.

When it helps

The Devine formula was created to calculate medication doses and is still referenced widely as a rough benchmark.

Worked example

At 175 cm, height is about 68.9 inches — 8.9 inches above 5 feet. For a man, the Devine formula gives 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 ≈ 70.5 kg. For a woman of the same height, it gives 45.5 + 2.3 × 8.9 ≈ 66 kg.

Below 5 feet (152.4 cm), the formula simply returns its starting value, because it was never designed for shorter heights.

Other formulas and better measures

The Devine formula from 1974 is one of several. The Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas use slightly different numbers and can give results a few kilograms apart, which shows how approximate any single figure is.

For a fuller picture, look at a healthy BMI range for your height with the BMI Calculator, your waist measurement, and how you feel and perform day to day. A doctor or dietitian can give guidance that fits your body.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the weight I should aim for?

Not necessarily. It ignores build and muscle mass. It's one rough reference among many.

Why does the formula start at 5 feet?

It was designed for adult heights. It becomes less meaningful for very short or tall people.

Does it account for age?

No. The formula uses only height and sex.
