HTML Formatter

Turn minified markup into readable HTML.

Indent and format minified or pasted HTML markup for readability.

How it works

The markup is split into tags and text, then re-indented one level for each nested element, so the structure of the document becomes visible.

When it helps

Useful for reading minified HTML, inspecting email templates, or cleaning up code pasted from elsewhere.

Why minified HTML is hard to read

To make pages load faster, many sites strip line breaks and indentation from their HTML, putting the whole document on a single line. Browsers don't care, but people do — it's nearly impossible to see which element sits inside which.

Re-indenting the markup puts each element on its own line, with children indented under their parents. Unclosed tags and misplaced elements become much easier to spot.

Typical uses

Developers format HTML to inspect the source of email templates, widgets and pages built by other tools, or to tidy code copied from a browser's developer tools. Marketers use it to check tracking snippets before adding them to a site.

Formatting runs in your browser, so you can paste internal or unpublished markup without it being uploaded anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does it change how the page looks?

Formatting only adds whitespace between tags. In rare cases, whitespace inside inline elements can affect spacing.

Does it validate HTML?

No. It indents what you give it, but doesn't check it against the HTML standard.

Will it fix broken HTML?

No. It indents what's there. If tags aren't closed properly, the indentation will look uneven, which is often a clue to where the error is.
