Discount Calculator

Final price after a percentage off.

Calculate the discount amount and final price after a percentage-off discount.

How it works

The discount amount is the original price × discount% / 100, and the final price is the original price minus that amount.

When it helps

Quickly check a sale price in a shop or compare offers like '30% off' versus a fixed-amount discount.

Worked examples

A jacket priced at 120 with 25% off: you save 120 × 25 / 100 = 30, so you pay 90. If the shop then takes an extra 10% at the till, that 10% applies to 90, saving another 9, for a final price of 81 — a total discount of 32.5%, not 35%.

To compare '30% off' with '40 off' on a 120 item, work out both: 30% saves 36, so the fixed 40 is the better deal here. On a 200 item, 30% saves 60 and wins.

Shopping smarter

A discount is only a saving if the original price was realistic. Compare with other shops or the item's usual price before a sale, since some products are marked up before being 'reduced'.

'Buy two, get one free' is a 33% discount per item only if you actually need three. Use the final price per item to compare offers fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Do two discounts add up?

Not exactly. 20% off then 10% off is 28% in total, not 30%, because the second applies to the reduced price.

How do I find the original price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100).

How do I find what percentage I saved?

Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. Saving 30 on 120 is 25%.
