All units are converted through square meters. One hectare is 10,000 m², one acre is about 4,046.86 m², and one square foot is 0.09290304 m².

Why area factors are squared

Area units are lengths squared, so their conversion factors are squared too. One meter is about 3.28 feet, but one square meter is 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76 square feet. Forgetting this is the most common mistake when converting floor plans by hand.

For land, hectares and acres are the usual units. A hectare is a square 100 m on each side (10,000 m²). An acre is about 40% of a hectare, which is why farm and plot sizes look very different depending on which unit a listing uses.

Worked examples

An 85 m² apartment is 85 × 10.764 ≈ 915 ft². A 2-acre plot is 2 × 4,046.86 ≈ 8,094 m², or about 0.81 hectares. A football pitch of roughly 105 × 68 m covers about 7,140 m², a little under three-quarters of a hectare.

To estimate flooring or paint, measure each room in meters or feet, multiply length by width, add the rooms together and then convert the total.
