Age Calculator
You are older than you think, and younger too.
Enter your birth date to see precisely how long you've been alive — and how long until your next birthday.
How it works
The calculator counts calendar years, then remaining months, then remaining days between your birth date and today, correctly handling leap years and months of different lengths. Total days and hours come from the exact difference between the two dates.
When it helps
It's handy for filling in forms that ask for an exact age, planning a milestone like your 10,000th day, or simply satisfying curiosity about how long you've been around.
How your exact age is worked out
The tool compares today's date with your birth date the way you would on a calendar: first the difference in years, then months, then days. If today's day of the month is earlier than your birth day, it borrows the length of the previous month, and if the month hasn't been reached yet this year, it borrows twelve months from the year count. The result is the familiar '34 years, 2 months and 11 days' format.
Total days alive are counted as whole calendar days between the two dates, and total hours are that figure times 24. The weekday you were born on comes straight from the calendar for your birth date.
Leap years and February 29 birthdays
Leap days are counted automatically in the total-days figure, since the tool uses real calendar dates rather than an average year length. If you were born on February 29, in years without a leap day the countdown treats March 1 as your next birthday. Many people with leap-day birthdays celebrate on February 28 instead — either way, your age in years is the same.
Handy uses
Beyond curiosity, an exact age is useful for forms that ask for age in years and months, for working out eligibility dates, or for planning a milestone celebration such as your 10,000th day alive.
Frequently asked questions
Does it account for leap years?
Yes. Every February 29th between your birth date and today is included in the day and hour totals.
Is my birth date stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser's local storage, so the field is pre-filled next time. It is never sent to our server.
Does the time of day I was born matter?
This calculator works with dates only, so your birth time doesn't change the result. Hours alive are an estimate based on whole days.
